From the Beardo the Movie the Media Kit:
How did this project start? Where did the idea come from?
Jeff Tocci: When plans for a Beard Club were in the making at James Madison University, my college, I looked up the World Beard and Moustache Championships (WBMC) to see what was going on in the bearded community. I saw that the U.S. was hosting the next event, and also saw that it was going to happen in May, right after I graduated. Documenting it seemed like a good idea, so I wrote a proposal to the World Beard and Moustache Association (WBMA) and got permission to shoot.
Kenny Lass: I first heard about the idea from Jeff, who pitched it as a visual feast. It made sense to me and I like beards, so I agreed to hop on.
Joey Groah: Jeff had interned with us in the summer of 2007, and we all got along well. He brought up the idea of shooting the WBMC to us and it grew organically until we, too, became involved in the production. Jeff had done a lot of the legwork in making contacts and getting permissions, and we tried to fill in any gaps.
Ryan Berry: Jeff pitched us the idea at first to seek some advice on what gear to use and how to handle it technically. That conversation led to some early camera tests and eventually to a full production plan. We produce a variety of projects here at DIGICO, but it’s not often that we are approached to fly to Alaska to make a film about beards, so when the opportunity arose we were all over it.
